What is OCD?

There is a widespread misunderstanding that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) simply refers to being overly organized, particular, or concerned with cleanliness. However, OCD is a serious mental health condition that can significantly interfere with a person’s daily life. It can affect individuals of different ages and backgrounds and involves recurring obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are persistent and unwanted thoughts, images, or impulses that can cause anxiety or emotional discomfort. In response to these thoughts, a person may perform certain behaviors or mental rituals, known as compulsions, to relieve their anxiety or feel a sense of control.
